GCSE Music Technology

The NCFE Music Technology is a course for those with a passion for modern contemporary music. The course aims to teach students the skills required to compose, sequence and record using the computer software Logic X, whilst also experiencing the use of a recording studio.

The course consists of one unit with the following 5 topic areas which are designed to introduce the concepts and skills of working with audio and MIDI to produce music:

  • Introduction to music technology and the music business

  • The digital audio workstation (DAW)

  • Musical elements, musical style and music technology

  • Sound creation

  • Multitrack recording

Whilst studying the different content area, the student will gain knowledge and experience in understanding how sequencing software systems operate; working with music technology software to produce original musical content, as well as exploring and experimenting with mixing techniques and effects. For each unit the student will provide evidence that demonstrates their understanding. The qualification has 2 assessments externally set by NCFE: one non-exam assessment and one written examined assessment. On successful completion of the course students will be awarded either pass, merit or distinction.

What sort of student does well?

First and foremost, students must have a passion for wanting to create music through the use of technology. As the course is made up from several large projects of work, students should be able to work independently for long periods and be enthusiastic about wanting to develop and explore their own original ideas. Students also need to be well organised and self-motivated in order to prepare evidence to the best of their ability.

Progression opportunities

Students who achieve at level 2 might consider progression to level 3 qualifications post-16, such as: A-Level Music Technology, Level 3 Applied General Certificate in Music Technology, Level 3 Certificate in Music Technology. Students could also progress into employment or onto an apprenticeship. The understanding and skills gained through this qualification could be useful to progress onto an apprenticeship in the industry through a variety of occupations that are available within the industry such as a producer, technician and arranger as well as other specialised fields within the TV, Film and Gaming industries.
