GCSE Design and Technology

This new GCSE Design and Technology qualification is an exciting and creative course which equips learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to apply iterative design processes through exploring, creating and evaluating a range of outcomes. The study of Design and Technology seeks to prepare learners to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world; and be aware of, and learn from, wider influences on D&T, including: historical, social/cultural, environmental and economic factors. Learners should use their creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes and products that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. The course should allow learners to apply knowledge from other subjects including mathematics, science, art, computing and humanities.

In year 9 you will continue to develop your generic designing skills. You will learn to become user focused using the iterative design process to solve real life problems. You will also develop your understanding of the following: systems design approach and User cantered design. In year 10 you become more specialist in one of the following material areas:

Fibres and Textiles

Resistant Materials

Electronic systems, programmable devices and mechanical devices

It is important when taking your options that you think about which of these areas you will prefer to work in as this will be your main material when completing your NEA in year 11.

What sort of student does well at this subject?
