GCSE Film Studies

Film is considered to be the major art form of the 20th Century and continues to play a part in most people's cultural lives. In Film Studies, you'll study cinema from different eras, cultures and genres. As a Film Studies student, you'll also have to show your creative skills, producing marketing material such as movie posters, writing screenplays for films of your own and perhaps even bringing your own film to the screen

What sort of student does well in the subject?

Students who enjoy film enjoy Film Studies! Successful Film Studies students enjoy all kinds of films and like thinking deeply about exactly how and why directors make the choices they do. Film Studies is also a practical subject, giving students who enjoy photography, film-making and using ICT an opportunity to shine.

The work you would do:

You’ll study films from America, the United Kingdom and South Africa. Some of these are huge ‘blockbusters’ while others are smaller, less well-known films. However, they’re all fascinating, thought-provoking and enjoyed by students.

You’ll also have to produce coursework (worth 30% of the final GCSE), requiring you to think like a filmmaker and come up with a movie concept of your own. You’ll then be able to write a part of the screenplay or film a sequence from your movie.
