GCSE Music Technology

NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Creative Studies: Music Technology

The course consists of the following 4 large units of work which are designed to introduce the basic concepts and skills of working with audio and MIDI to produce music:

•Set up and operate a digital audio workstation

•Create music using a digital audio workstation

•Producing dance music

•Working with digital audio

Whilst studying the different units, the student will gain knowledge and experience in understanding how sequencing software systems operate; working with music technology software to produce original musical content, as well as exploring and experimenting with mixing techniques and effects. For each unit the student will provide a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates their understanding in relation to the learning outcomes set by the exam board; three of the units are internally assessed and moderated with the final one being externally assessed. Throughout the course, students will be continually guided and supported in producing their portfolio of evidence. On successful completion of the course students will be awarded either pass, merit or distinction. At the end of the course students will sit an externally assessed exam. There is a written exam (2 hours) and a practical exam (2 hours).

What sort of student does well?

First and foremost students must have a passion for wanting to create music through the use of technology. As the course is made up from several large projects of work, students should be able to work independently for long periods and be enthusiastic about wanting to develop and explore their own original ideas. Due to the requirement of a portfolio of evidence, students also need to be well organised and self motivated in order to prepare evidence to the best of their ability.
